Study Skills
For this weeks task, week number 3 I have reviewed 3 videos about different study skills and also about media literacy. The first video that's called "three best science -based study tips " this video was broken down into 3 parts to study more effectively these methods were recommended by Augustine to study medicine. Firstly they talked about the quizzing style also known as active recall Quizzing can also be used as a method of studying by using flash cards, practise questions and notes this method forces the brain to go through motions
The second method that was talked about in the video was spacing also known by spaced repetition this is a method that is used overtime to retain information. If knowledge isn't revised there's such thing known as the 'forgetting curve' To prevent this from happening he mentioned the use of revision timetables. The final method talked about in this particular video was the method of mixing. This method is also known as interleaving this method consists of alternating between different topics. What was also talked about in this video was the importance of taking a break after every 50 minutes you should take a 10 minute break.
In the second video that I watched about study skills was called active reading, in this video he discussed 5 different active reading strategies. The first one being called pseudo skimming this is an act of skimming over each paragraph and try and clue in on any information that withholds the key points. The second method which is to read backwards, meaning go to the end of the chapter or the shortened down revised section of a chapter and see what information they want you to take from the chapter. The third method was a method in which you write down questions that you are unsure about when reading then go back and see if you can then answer those questions. The 4th method discussed is paying attention to the format of the context you are looking at for example words that are in bold and these should with held key information. The final strategy discussed was the use of marking books or making notes within the book this helps when you have finished the book as they stand out and you can take the information you need from the chapters in those notes.
The final video discussed the importance of deconstructing media and how her goal is for young people to be able to see through the likes of newspaper articles, advertisements, and some sitcoms. media literacy is taking an ad and deconstructing it to highlight the untold story behind it.
The methods in both videos I can relate to as i have used some of these myself whilst studying in secondary school and its good to see these videos that encourage people to study with these methods so that can exceed their potential. Reading is a great way to escape reality and go to where ever your mind takes you I also feel similarly to writing as you are completely putting down your raw thoughts and how you feel on a situation. Media literacy allows students to learn the real intentions of what the ads or articles want the public to see it for and then for what the truth actually is.
