active reading

For the reading task for week number 3 I had to read about study skills. The first two passages are from the website “theopenuniversity.com” this website had some interesting useful tips and tricks that I will be encountering over my time in college and further into the future. In the first passage it was talked about the importance of understanding and knowing what and why you are reading the text and what you are going to gain from reading. This is done by using a series of techniques the first technique is skimming over texts before diving into reading it all. I myself always do this as I find it helps me gain better knowledge of what I'm about to get into. this is done by reading any key information first that stand out to you so any headings in bold or any key words that are highlighted. It is also encouraged to take notes whilst reading and that way when you are looking back whether that’s for exams of just to go back and revise you have the shortened down version that contains all the key information that u can skim over.

In the second passage I read all about the importance of active reading. Active reading is something I personally find very useful as I think it helps the reader stay focused and engage in what they are reading rather than just reading it and then at the end highlighting and putting notes together. when it is done throughout reading the texts you can then go back and key in on the highlighted information. It is also said to be useful to try and teach other about the topic you have studied. I find this a very useful tip as I have done this, and it makes you understand it in a way that makes sense not just off by heart sentence's as you are able to explain these topics. Another tip that is mentioned in active reading is the use of recording yourself and listening back on the recording when you are free or just doing daily tasks. I find this a useful tip especially if it's being used in the likes of studying languages as you can listen to pronunciations of the words and get a better grasp for it. The use of sticky notes is also a part of active reading these can be used when reading books as you can stick them to the page and write down the key parts that need to be remembered in the chapter.
